Should BC require parents who don’t want their kids immunized to take a class on it?

SURREY (NEWS 1130) -Moms and dads in Ontario who don’t want their kids vaccinated could be forced to go back to school to take a course on the science of immunization – should BC do the same?

Our province’s education minister’s short answer is “no.” Mike Bernier says that idea isn’t even on the table here in BC and likely won’t be.

He says a final decision has stayed and will stay with parents.

“Right down even to a school level, there’s information that is shared with the students, with the parents on the opportunities and the advantage of vaccination. But then [it’s left] up to the parents for those decisions.”

“Right now in British Columbia it’s really about leaving those decisions up to the parents, but making sure the parents are armed with all of the proper information to make that decision.”

And he adds they’re education moms and dads through communication which means through campaigns about the benefits of being immunized.

Bernier adds they are working with the health ministry and local health authorities to ensure all vaccination-related information easily accessible.
