SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Surrey’s mayor wants more action in the city’s film industry.
In today’s State of the City address, she announced she’s signed a deal to bring in a major production studio.
Skydance Studios is setting up a production studio at the former Pacific Newspaper Building.
The company has produced major films like Star Trek and Mission Impossible.
Mayor Linda Hepner is thrilled:
“We’ve already got a successful model in terms of [TV and film] shooting in Surrey, with various programs, but they don’t actually do the production in the city so a studio is a big deal for us,” Hepner says.
She expects it will bring 400 jobs and more economic spinoff.
Also in the State of the City Address today is a plan to look at a Surrey Heliport for a growing business population.
Hepner says executives are moving in droves to her community and they want easy connections to Downtown Vancouver and Victoria.
“We’re in site-selection mode right now,” Hepner says. “I know it takes a while so I would say by this time next year when I come back and do another State of the City, we’ll have that pretty solidified.”
Hepner also reassures fighting the city’s crime problem will continue to be a big focus for her government.
