International campaign aims to raise funds to provide shelter for refugees

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It is being called the biggest global displacement crisis since World War two and now a global campaign has been launched to help raise funds from the private sector to provide shelter solutions for two million refugees in the next three years. It’s called “Nobody Left Outside.”

“Shelter is the foundation from which refugees can start to rebuild their lives,” explains Gisele Nyembwe with the office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. “The protection of refugees of course has so many aspects but the vision of the Nobody Left Outside campaign is to ensure that no refugee or no refugee family is left outside and unprotected to cope on their own.”

“Failure to provide adequate shelter can have a dramatic effect on their safety, it exposes them to serious health risks and it’s a platform for recovery for refugees.”

She says in the past five years we’ve had at least 15 conflicts – in Syria, millions have left for UN camps in Jordan while in Burundi over 100,000 people have fled to search for safety in Tanzania. Each day almost 30,000 people become refugees, asylum seekers or displaced in their own country.
