Businesses worry removing the viaducts could be disastrous for Produce Row

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Some businesses along a strip known as “Produce Row” in East Vancouver are worried about the impact of removing the Georgia and Dunsmuir Viaducts and pushing commuter traffic from Prior and Venables Streets onto their road.

Vice-President of FreshPoint Bryan Uyesugi thinks rerouting even a portion of the estimated 25,000 vehicles that currently travel along there would be disastrous for a historic part of the city.

“We need to keep our food and vegetable cost at a reasonable level and we need to keep this important hub to be able to do that,” he explains. “This ‘Produce Row’ is an important link to the city’s produce supply. I mean just the sheer competitive nature of the street, it gives the streets customers a cost-effective competitive edge when they go to the market.”

Lon LaClaire with the City of Vancouver admits Malkin Avenue is the frontrunner but National Avenue is also being considered. “Mainly because the transportation performance is much better than National, it reduces travel time by three to five minutes and the cost is much lower.”

He adds no decision final has been made.
