More roadside flareups in Surrey due to tossed cigarette butts

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Surrey is dealing with more roadside fires than it was at this time last year.

Assistant Fire Chief Steve Robinson says most of those are human-caused, especially because of discarded cigarettes.

“We just really need people to help out and we need people to make sure the dispose of their cigarette butts properly,” explains Robinson.

“In your car, if you don’t have an ash tray, use an old pop can. Put a little bit of water in the bottom of that and use that as your ash tray instead of flicking that butt out the window.”

Tossing your cigarette butts can come with a $173 ticket.
