Video shows senior assaulted in Vancouver; VPD looking for more witnesses

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Police are hoping more people will call them with information following a random attack involving an 84-year-old woman at a busy intersection in Vancouver late last month.

It happened at Broadway and Ash Street. The woman was sitting on her walker when a man walked up from behind, kicked her off her seat and then walked away. She suffered a broken elbow.

The VPD has spoken to some witnesses but need more information to shore up enough evidence to recommend charges. “One of those possible witnesses may have the first name of ‘Amber.’ Again, we’re asking any witnesses to come forward and provide us with any details they may have,” explains Constable Brian Montague.

They’re hoping by watching the video, it will help jog people’s memories of that day. However, the issue with the surveillance images is that it’s grainy and doesn’t identify person believed to be responsible.

The suspect in this case has already been charged in another attack against a senior that happened at Broadway and Granville St. just a couple of hours after the first incident. In that case, a 70-year-old woman in a wheelchair was randomly punched in the face.

They believe mental illness was a factor in the assaults.

The suspect is also facing several charges in connection with a number of other unrelated incidents.

If you have any information about the assault, you’re asked to call the VPD at 604.717.2541.
