One local expert calls this a big step towards acceptance

Festivities will begin at Surrey City Hall Plaza on Sunday morning

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – For decades, people in Vancouver have marched through the West End celebrating the LGBTQ community. And now people in Surrey are following suite and gearing up for that city’s first Pride Parade.

Jen Marchbank, an associate professor of Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies at Simon Fraser University, says it’s a major move forward.

She notes the parade comes as a pride history display is up at city hall. “For those of us who live in Surrey, it is a means by which we are getting great acknowledgement for our city and acceptance.”

Marchbank expects the mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando a couple of weeks ago to be on peoples’ minds as another reason to stand strong. “I think everybody who will march and everybody who will attend will have the events from Orlando in the back of their minds.”

The parade will start at Surrey City Hall Plaza and end at Holland Park on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
