VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The people that save lost hikers on our mountains are asking for help themselves this weekend.
It’s already been a very busy year for North Shore Rescue, but today’s RescueFest is a time to unwind, and raise some much needed funds
Team leader Mike Danks says they used to average 100 calls a year, but have already hit 52 so far. “If you tie that in with training and then the public education that we do and the maintenance facilities, it’s a lot of work for a volunteer squad. This fund is really key to taking some of the pressure off our volunteers.”
Danks says it’s getting more expensive to operate every year. We also have a number of SAR stations that are located through-out the North Shore, we have a quite an extensive cache setup throughout the North Shore as well and a vast communications network and all of that stuff costs money to maintain.”
They are trying to raise $6-million for the Tim Jones Legacy Fund.
AdventureSmart will also be there today to talk about how to stay safe in the back country.
The event runs from 5:00pm to 11:00pm at Shipbuilders’ Square in the North Vancouver.
