Fire destroys two homes, spreads to forest above Indian Arm

INDIAN ARM (NEWS 1130) – Two homes have been completely gutted after an early morning fire in a remote area of Indian Arm on the North Shore. Crews faced some challenges as they tried to douse the flames.

The fire broke out just after 5 a.m. at Brighton Beach. Calls to 911 reported large orange flames and explosions. Some propane tanks were found on the properties.

As crews arrived, they discovered the flames jumping from one home to another and eventually into the nearby forest.

Stephanie Smiley with the District of North Vancouver says they responded with the help of Vancouver crews and they had to fight the fire from the water because the area is only accessible by boat.

“It certainly makes it challenging. The crews practice this kind of response but, of course, fighting fire from the fire boat is trickier than running a hose from the hydrant.”

Crews don’t how much the damage is going to cost.

“The area that was covered was about 100 feet up the slope by about 30 to 40 feet wide,” notes Smiley.

No one was hurt. The owners weren’t home at the time, but they’ve been notified.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
