Both provincial and private campgrounds filling up this summer

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A quick look up at the sky in Metro Vancouver is all you need to realize it doesn’t exactly look or feel like summer right now, but even so, business has been booming for BC’s provincial campgrounds.

BC Parks added four new campsites to its database this year, letting you book online. There have already been 92,000 reservations.

And it seems the region’s private campgrounds are experiencing similar interest.

It appears everyone wants to camping, says Brad Hunter who operates Wonderland Valley Resort in Squamish. “We are definitely seeing an uptick in advanced reservations as well as drive-in, day-of reservations.”

And it’s not just long weekends.

“People are just showing up wanting to camp on a daily basis. Our mid-week numbers are up substantially from last year as well,” Hunter points out.

He tells us a lot of drop-in campers are unaware of just how busy things are, adding that with no new campgrounds opening, existing ones are filling up quickly.

“It’s definitely up ever since the beginning of the spring,” says Gabriella Phillips, who manages the Klahanie Campground in Squamish.

“Right now, all the weekends in July are basically solidly booked. We have some dates within the weekdays still available. Then again, it definitely has increased from last year.”

So, where are they coming from?

“Most of them in tenting would be from Vancouver and Seattle. Most of them are climbers as well, and outdoors people. The rest, the RVs come from Europe and Germany,” says Phillips.

Which is why, she says, calling ahead is always better than dropping in unannounced.
