Vancouver’s bike share program closer to reality; docking stations being set up

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – We are getting closer to an official launch of Mobi, Vancouver’s long-awaited bike sharing program.

So far, about 25 docking stations have been installed around the city.

Scott Edwards with the City of Vancouver says there’s been a lot of interest in the program, and a lot of people have signed up.

“It’s approximately 1,100 at this point, which has been growing every single day. The operator, I believe, has a goal of 5,000 by the end of the summer or later this year.”

Edwards says once everything is rolled out, Mobi will include a network of 1,500 bikes at 150 docking stations.

“[The stations] will cover the area throughout the downtown, the central Broadway [area]… roughly from Main Street to Arbutus — and to the south, approximately 16th.”

Membership prices range from $99 and $129. Users will then use something similar to the Compass Card to unlock and return a bike and helmet to a station.

While there is still no official launch date, the program is expected to be fully functional by the end of summer at the latest.
