Missing mom and toddler possibly spotted in Mission

NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS 1130) – A missing mother from Maple Ridge and her 14-month-old son may have been spotted, but there’s still no word on whether the small family is OK.

Police are beginning to suspect she doesn’t want to be found.

Photos and descriptions have been shared widely since Kimberly Armstrong and her son Rocky were reported missing by a friend on August 4th.

New Westminster Police Sergeant Jeff Scott says Armstrong and her son were apparently spotted in Mission since being reported missing. “A passerby recognized them from our release and called in, but unfortunately police were not able to make contact with her. She had left the location where she was seen prior to police arrival.”

Police believe Armstrong left her home with her son on her own. Sergeant Jeff Scott doubts Armstrong isn’t aware police are looking for her by now. “When we’re trying to get a hold of somebody to confirm their well-being and they’re not necessarily coming forward or reporting to a police station, our level of concern for that person’s ability to care for their child is raised.”

At this point, this is not considered a criminal investigation. BC’s Ministry of Children and Family Services is now helping in the search, along with RCMP in the Mission and Maple Ridge areas.

Sergeant Scott says they have spoken with Rocky’s father and there is no custody dispute at play as far as police can tell.

He says police don’t know what Armstrong’s financial circumstances are or if she has a history of drug use. Armstrong is 39-years-old and has blonde hair. She is driving an older, white, 4-door, unlicensed Hyundai Excel. Her son Rocky has a noticeable birthmark on his face.
