Poll suggests our relationship with dogs is getting a little weird

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Almost every single dog owner in BC surveyed in a new poll says their dog is part of their family but are we starting to take our relationship with man’s best friend a little too far? The findings suggest it’s starting to get a little weird.

Maybe you can get away with it in Vancouver with those little doggy raincoats, but 41 per cent of dog-owners in BC admit to buying clothes for their pooch and 60 per cent cancel plans when there is no pet sitter available.

Mario Canseco with Insights West says where we rank our pets among people might have you questioning your own status at home. Fifty-four per cent admit their significant others may have competition. “There are days when they love their dog more than their spouse, partner or significant other. The millennials generation and also baby boomers who have some days where they say, ‘I love my dog more than I love you.'”

Meantime, 80 per cent of those asked say they would not date or marry someone who didn’t like their dog. But a canine is not a deal breaker for non-dog owners — 73 per cent of them say they would be with someone who had a dog.

Three-in-10 British Columbians have a dog at home and of them, 99 per cent say it’s part of the family.
