BC restaurants cope with low salmon numbers

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Low Sockeye salmon counts mean there probably won’t be any commercial fishing on the Fraser River this summer, but don’t expect that to have much impact on the price of salmon at your favourite restaurant.

BC Restaurant and Food Services Association president Ian Tostenson says while the wholesale price of salmon will likely jump 15 percent, it’s a problem restaurants have dealt with many times before.

“Restaurants are very adept at dealing with all sorts of issues, particularly around supply management,” he says. The number one way of dealing with such issues according to Tostenson is portion size.

“That 15 per cent may mean a slightly smaller bit of salmon on your plate, but you’re still going to have salmon. So I don’t think this is going to be a disaster by any stretch of the imagination.”

The latest salmon counts on the Fraser are well below the forecast of 2.2 million, which was already low because of the four-year cycle.
