Vancouver team headed to Little League World Series

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – For the fifth time in seven years, a little league team from Vancouver will represent Canada at this summer’s Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA.

Hastings Community Little League won the Canadian championship on home turf Saturday, beating Whalley 1-0 in the final at Hastings Park.

“You dream that this is the scenario that takes place, but when it actually happens, it’s very, very surreal,” says James Douglas, a board executive for the league who also helped organize the tournament.

This will be the third time Hastings Community has served as Team Canada, having done it in 2009 and 2012.

“We have a lot of long-time dedicated volunteers, and when you have consistency in your program, you tend to have a little more success,” Douglas explains.

However, no Canadian little league team has ever won the World Series, and Hastings Community’s first match-up on Friday is against defending champion Japan.

“Japan has generally be one of the best teams in little league for years,” says Douglas, “so while I like our chances, I know we’re going to be in tough. But this is a very resilient group.”
