NS law society won’t appeal Trinity Western ruling

HALIFAX (NEWS 1130) – The Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society will not take its legal battle involving Trinity Western University to the Supreme Court of Canada.
Last month, the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal upheld a decision allowing graduates of the Christian university law school to practice in the province.
The BC school is under scrutiny for forbidding sexual intimacy outside heterosexual marriage.
The barristers’ society says while it remains committed to equity and diversity in Nova Scotia’s legal profession, it has decided after getting legal advice to “take the matter no further.”
The society amended its regulations in 2014 to say the Trinity Western requirement represented unlawful discrimination against gays and lesbians.
A Nova Scotia Supreme Court judge later ruled the society had exceeded its jurisdiction — a decision that was upheld in last month’s appeal court ruling.
