Search continues for missing hiker in Chilliwack

CHILLIWACK (NEWS 1130) – Members of several local search and rescue teams are scouring the rugged Cheam Mountain range in the eastern Fraser Valley, hoping to find any sign of a missing hiker.

Gordon Sagoo, 50, was hiking with two friends to Baby Munday Peak, southeast of Bridal Falls, on Sunday when he went ahead of the group and went missing.

He is described as a well-known, experienced outdoorsman and ultramarathon runner who is very familiar with trails in the area. His niece, Manpreet Gill, says her uncle would hike every Sunday and was always respectful of his environment.

A Tweet from Chilliwack Search and Rescue confirms its members began searching Sunday night and are continuing their efforts.

“It caught us off guard that he hasn’t returned,” she says, adding the search has been hampered by the rugged mountain terrain.

“The first day as they went out there and explored the terrain more, it was apparent there was quite a bit of ridge line and rock climbing technical ability that was required.”

A fundraising page posted by the family also thanks Port Coquitlam, Surrey and Lions Bay search and rescue team members for assisting.

Gill says if crews have to call off the search, they hope to use some of the money raised to fund a private search.
