US swimmer Lochte lied about robbery in Rio: police

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL (NEWS 1130) – Remember that story earlier this week that US Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte and three of his teammates were robbed at gunpoint while competing at the Games in Rio? Police now say it never happened.

They apparently lied about it to cover up a brawl they had with a security guard at a gas station. Investigators in Brazil have video which shows at least one of the swimmers throwing punches with the man, and then another breaking down the door of a bathroom.

“One of the swimmers was seen on CCTV footage breaking down the door to the bathroom at the gas station and fighting with a security guard,” said one Brazilian police official.

Two of the swimmers had planned to head home to the US on Wednesday night, but were reportedly pulled off the plane and had their passports seized. Their other teammate was supposed to fly out on Wednesday as well, but never showed up for his flight.

The trio is set to speak with investigators about what really happened. Lochte landed back in the US on Monday.

The US State Department is urging the swimmers to cooperate with investigators in Brazil.
