Local athletes return home from Rio Olympics

RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) – Our Olympic athletes are arriving at YVR after representing us in Rio.

Bronze medal relay swimmer Emily Overholt gave a shout out to her former coaches at the West Vancouver Otters Swim Club where she got her start. “It was incredible. I mean that’s where I started, that is what made me love swimming and my coaches there were amazing. They got me on my first national team, so I really want to thank them a lot for everything that they did for me because they got me to where I am here.”

She’s hoping the success that she and other Canadian’s had in Rio inspires more girls to take up the sport across the country. “I think that swimming is doing really well in Canada right now so if that helps inspire some of the younger kids to join swimming and to help keep that rolling, I think that would be really good and then the next four, eight, twelve years I guess. It can be really good for Canada.”

She battled through a hamstring injury to sub in for a sick teammate and help the women’s 4×200-metre freestyle relay team qualify for the final, where the team claimed the bronze.
