VIFF launches new programming format to enhance movie experience

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Vancouver International Film Festival is projecting a bright future as they introduce a new programming format to bring the movie experience into the 21st century.

Since the film fest began 35 years ago, a lot has changed in the way audiences interact with their movies. To help the festival stay relevant in the digital age, VIFF has introduced streams, which bundle the entire multi-media movie experience, from the film itself to lectures and special events, into eight categories.

“Within a traditional film festival model, it can be a challenge to introduce new types of content, but within this new model we have the opportunity to be flexible and react to market conditions,” VIFF executive director Jacqueline Dupuis says.

This year’s programming streams include Panorama (international), Ignite (BC), True North (Canadian), Impact (current events and important topics), Next (virtual reality, gaming, emerging digital platforms), Gateway (Eastern Asia), M/A/D (music, art, design), and ALT (fringe and alternative).

The Stream programming will be incorporated into the Vancouver International Film Centre’s daily work and will continue throughout the year.

VIFF is also debuting its Hub at the film centre which will feature interactive screen-based experiences like virtual reality and talks with creators and industry leaders.

The 35th annual VIFF takes place Sept. 29 to Oct. 14. The full list of films is available online.

Tickets start at $15 with passes and ticket packs available Sept. 1 with single tickets up for grabs online Sept. 8 and in-person Sept. 15.
