WHITE ROCK (NEWS 1130) – A woman has been attacked by a pit bull in White Rock, leaving her with a serious injury to her hand.

The senior had been trying to stop the pit bull from killing her pet, according to the city.

It happened back on August 20th. The woman was walking her small dog when the unleashed pit bull came out from a yard nearby. The pit bull attacked the smaller animal and the woman’s hand was severely bitten as she tried to shield her pet.

White Rock Acting Mayor Bill Lawrence victim has been released from the hospital. “She is current at home convalescing and resting. From last I heard, she’s doing well based on the circumstances, but she’s definitely a champ for what she has gone through, putting herself in between the pit bull and her dog. ”

The woman’s dog is faring a little worse, requiring a second trip to the vet’s office.

The pit bull is back with its owner while the city continues its investigation and decides on the best outcome. Lawrence says it’s too soon to say what action the city might take against the owner or the dog. Bylaw officers have deemed the dog to be aggressive.

Lawrence says the vast majority of dog owners in White Rock are responsible, but this case should still serve as a reminder. “The main focus is having individuals be vigilant with the protection of other people as well as other dogs when they are out in public. When it comes to aggressive breeds, the fact that they have to be even more vigilant is imperative just based on the nature of the breeds.”
