Time to decide whether to seek Tory leadership, says former MP Peter MacKay

By

OTTAWA – Peter MacKay says he knows he will have to decide quickly whether he will join the Conservative leadership race.

The former cabinet minister from Nova Scotia says he needs to decide soon in order to avoid freezing out other would-be candidates or otherwise influencing their decisions.

Conservatives say that since MacKay would be a strong contender to replace former prime minister Stephen Harper, some other potential hopefuls are likely waiting to see what he will do.

MacKay, now working as a lawyer in Toronto, says he remains concerned about the impact that a leadership bid would have on his family, including his two small children.

Conservative MPs Kellie Leitch, Maxime Bernier, Michael Chong and Tony Clement have formally joined the race, but at least another dozen people are either poised to join or are contemplating a bid.

The Tories will vote for a new leader next May.
