UFV to teach Arts grads how to market skills to employers

ABBOTSFORD (NEWS 1130) – The University of the Fraser Valley hopes changes to its Bachelor of Arts degree will help students market their skills once they’ve graduated.

The changes, which take effect in the Fall 2017 semester, are designed to bring skills, which were already included in the program, into the spotlight and introduce an ePortfolio.

“Students were saying to us, ‘we know we learned stuff, but we don’t know how to communicate it,” College of Arts Associate Dean of Students Alisa Webb says. “‘We can say I was a bachelor of arts student with a major in history,’ but to break it down to what’s transferable and what an employer will understand; they were missing that piece.”

Webb says new courses will include interpersonal and intercultural skills, oral and written communication, quantitative and scientific literacy, and teamwork skills.

“It’s really a process of making things more overt,” Webb says.

The courses will be mandatory, but will only make up a small fraction of the overall degree requirements.
