VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A new app has made its way from Colombia to the Lower Mainland to encourage locals to get out of their cars and onto their bikes.
The more you pedal, the more rewards you can earn. The idea is to get more cars off the road to help Vancouver reach the “greenest city” title by incentivizing cycling.
For each kilometre you bike, you earn a Biko and those can be pooled together and cashed in to be exchanged for discounts, freebies, and VIP perks.
Biko’s Molly Miller says they’ve already got great partners.
“Including breweries, like The Granville Island Brewery and Big Rock; bike shops like Reckless and the Bike Doctor; The Vancouver Art Gallery; Rocanini coffee roasters; the Burrard Hotel; and a great bike bag company called Two Wheel Gear,” says Miller, who says you basically get paid to bike.
“So, you could go to the Vancouver Art Gallery, and the Granville Island Brewery for dinner all with Bikoes you’ve earned.”
She says they’re also in talks with Vancouver’s bike share Mobi to build a partnership.
And you don’t have to be in Vancouver to collect Bikoes.
“You can earn Bikoes anywhere in the world — Lower Mainland definitely included! And then you redeem your rewards at local businesses,” explains Miller. She adds the app stated in Colombia and moved its way up north of the equator.
The app is free and available for iOS and android.
