Important to monitor school-aged athletes for head injuries: expert

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – School is back in session and that means it’s time for contact sports like football and hockey. The clinical director of Vancouver’s Advance Concussion Clinic is highlighting the importance of monitoring school-aged athletes when it comes to head injuries.

Younger, developing athletes are at a greater risk if they suffer a concussion says Dr. Cirelle Rosenblatt. “The reason why we’re more concerned about concussions perhaps in youth athletes than we are in adults has to do with their development and where they’re at in their growth, not just in terms of their brains but in terms of their social lives and academic lives as well.”

“The youth athlete has a developing brain and having disruptions to the brain when it is developing means that it is affecting some key areas of growth that can’t necessarily be made up if damage has occurred.”

Rosenblatt favours schools having standardized concussion protocols in place.
