Leaky Vancouver school to move students into portables

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Hundreds of students at Magee Secondary will be moving to portables sometime this school year because the roof, walls, and windows are leaking.

Magee is the newest school in the city and was rebuilt in 2000, but problems became apparent not long after.

Vancouver School Board Chair Mike Lombardi says the repairs are expected to take a year to a year and a half to complete. “[There will be] six to eight portables on the field of Magee… and then we will rotate the kids so we can do the whole school.”

He wants it done as soon as possible with the least amount of disruption to students.

“Get the thing fixed in a way which makes sense to engineers. It is under the oversight of the school board but funded by the insurance department of the Government of British Columbia.”

He points out the new school was constructed during the era of leaky condos, but so far there is no indication of any mold.
