BC gov’t shares feedback on ride-sharing services like Uber

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – The public consultation process on whether to allow ride-sharing services in BC is trudging along, with the provincial government releasing the results of its feedback from stakeholders.

Groups including taxi companies, business associations, consumer protection organizations, the insurance industry, rider-sharing companies like Uber and different levels of government have weighed in.

Safe driver training, mandatory vehicle inspections and criminal background checks for drivers are a couple of the ideas suggested. Some have called for regulations on what a minimum level of insurance would be.

Consultations on what to do about companies like Uber, which wants to operate in Vancouver, have been ongoing since January. The minister responsible for the file Peter Fassbender says they still don’t know when a final decision might be made. “We’re sending [the report] out to all the stakeholders that provided us with input. It will be a topic of discussion at UBCM. And then we’re asking for all of those stakeholders to get back to us if we have missed anything. I’m pretty sure based on the hours that both Minister Stone and I have spent on this, we’ve got all the feedback we need. And then we’ll look at what proposals might be brought forward to government, but I don’t have a time frame on that.”

Fassbender adds the public has been and is still invited to provide feedback via email here.
