Canadian women lagging behind when it comes to life expectancy: report

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – In Canada, we are often thought to have a top-notch health care system when compared to other countries around the world, but we don’t come out on top when it comes to the number of people living past age 70.

A new study finds overall, between 1960 and 2010, life expectancy improved, but Canada has stayed in the middle of the pack when compared to 17 other countries.

Those include Australia, Switzerland, Denmark, Finland, the UK, the U-S and the Netherlands.

Jean Harvey with the Canadian Institute for Health Information explains women overall in Canada lost ground between the 1990s and 2010.

The results for women varied according to causes of death.

“So when you look specifically at cancer, yes the Canadian women weren’t fairing quite as well as women in other similar OECD countries.”

The results varied depending on a few factors.

“What this reports actually showed, is that there was a different story depending on which diseases you were looking at.”

Both men and women stayed consistently behind the international median when it came to a certain type of heart disease.
