It’s National Coffee Day and the Brits are baffled by Timbits

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Call it the commuter’s little helper!

As we celebrate National Coffee Day with a steaming hot cup of caffeinated goodness (or maybe a decaf, ristretto, quad-shot, nut milk, cinnamon macchiato, because this is Vancouver after all) the BBC is brewing up some surprising reactions to common Canuck coffee terms.

The quintessentially Canadian Tim Hortons is expanding in Britain, meaning lingo like “double double” and “Timbits” is popping up on the streets, baffling the tea-guzzling English.

When asked to provide the definition of Timbit, some Brits were completely puzzled.

“Tim bar? Isn’t that like a dating website?” asked one passerby. Sorry, swipe left. That’s Tinder.

In fact, very few on the streets of London could make sense of Tim Hortons jargon for the BBC, though to be fair if you tell the uninitiated you had a double-double and downed some Timbits before work, it does sound a little dirty.

The BBC did actually talk to some Canadians who, in some respects, didn’t disagree.

“If you drink it black, you might as well be drinking puddle water,” says one Torontonian.
