Youth mental health advocates meet Royal couple

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A group of young Canadians will take to the high seas with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Sunday in an effort to end mental health stigma.

Members of Jack.org will meet the royal couple aboard a tall ship operated by the Sail and Life Training Society for an hour-long sail and conversation.

“It’s going to be an absolutely fantastic opportunity,” student representative Miranda Benoit says. “It really helps to normalize conversations about mental health. If people like the Duke and Duchess are talking about it and saying it’s important, it’s suddenly on so many more people’s radars.”

Benoit says the trip includes a chance to discuss what their groups is doing to improve mental health discussion and to learn the Duke and Duchess’ role in mental health advocacy.

It’s a passion shared by the royal couple, who work with their own mental health organizations in the United Kingdom.

“Everyone has mental health and everyone should be doing things to take care of it and no one should be afraid or ignorant to the topic,” Benoit says.
