Boat partially sinks near Tofino with dozens on board

TOFINO (NEWS 1130) – For the second time in less than a year, a tour boat owned by Jamie’s Whaling Station has run into trouble off the coast of Vancouver Island.

The Canadian Coast Guard says the 40 foot Stellar Sea vessel, (typically used for bear watching according to the company’s website,) hit the shallows and partially sank near Warn Bay late yesterday evening.

The Joint Co-ordination Rescue Centre in Victoria confirms 27 people were on board. All were safely brought off board, and no injuries have been reported.

Jamie’s Whaling Station also owned the Leviathan II, which capsized in choppy waters near Tofino last October, leaving six dead and prompting legal action from some of the survivors.

The company was not immediately available for comment. They have hired a contractor to salvage the vessel, according to a statement the Coast Guard.

Response specialists have been sent in to monitor the situation.
