Whitecaps down to last playoff hope against Sounders

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It doesn’t seem likely the Whitecaps will make the MLS post-season. The team has heard that line for weeks, and now it’s simple on Sunday night at BC Place against the Seattle Sounders. The Whitecaps must earn a full three points to have any hope for the playoffs.

“We’re not just going to let these games pass us by.” Whitecaps head coach Carl Robinson said earlier this week.

Vancouver is still in contention for the Cascadia Cup Title, so these remaining matches against Seattle and Portland on October 23rd still mean something.

A single point in Sunday’s game would knock Seattle out of the running, setting up a showdown against Portland for the Cup.

So there’s that.

“We view (Seattle and Portland) them different to what they view us. It’s a Darby game, so it’s very important to me and my players, and the club that we try to get the better of them.” Robinson said.

“I’m sure there will be blood, sweat, and thunder which is what we all want to see. And some goals.”

If anything, it’s a chance to improve on what’s been a dismal home record by most standards. The Whitecaps have gone just 5-4-6 at BC Place this season. If you want to pinpoint why the ‘Caps were unable to get the job done – if that is indeed their fate – you can certainly point to that stat as to why.

Vancouver and Seattle have split the season series, with each team winning once. The Sounders still have plenty to play for, as they sit tied with the Portland Timbers for the final playoff position in the Western conference.

The Sounders will be without midfielder Nicolas Lodeiro, who has three goals and eight assists in 10 games since joining Seattle as a designated player in July.
