KKK flyers suggest racist undercurrent, professor says

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – RCMP are investigating after flyers claiming to be from the Ku Klux Klan were delivered to homes in Abbotsford, Chilliwack and Mission.

This, paired with the emergence of a patrol group called the Soldiers of Odin, have raised the question: are we becoming more racist?

Dr. John Paul Catungal with the UBC’s Social Justice Institute says he doesn’t see these events as anything new, but instead, as an escalation of an undercurrent that is already part of our society.

He adds it could, in part, be a response to recent attention on the housing market and Syrian refugees.

“The very visible and felt presence — that is threatening to the idea of who Canada is, who Vancouver, Chilliwack, Abbotsford are,” Catungal says. “There is a kind of discourse of ownership of who belongs here that is underpinning that, and who belongs here is also something that underpins these flyers.”

Soldiers of Odin has denied any racist activity or motivations, though critics have voiced concerns.
