PM Trudeau talks about what the Liberals have planned for 2017

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It has been one year since Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was elected and he’s marking the anniversary by appearing on morning news programs across the country.

Speaking on CityTV’s Breakfast Television program in Vancouver, Trudeau outlined his Liberal government’s achievements, ranging from the child tax benefit and Canada Pension Plan changes to the reopening of the Kitsilano Coast Guard station.

Trudeau sidestepped the question about calls for a ban on tanker traffic along the BC coast, instead saying his government is committed to improving marine safety.

“Over the past years there has been a lot of under-investment by the federal government in marine safety and spill response, and that’s something we’re absolutely commited to turn around.”

The Prime Minister pointed to the recent running aground of a tug off the Great Bear Rainforest as a prime example of the kind of changes that need to be made — the tug went down last Thursday when it started leaking fuel, and efforts to clean up the wreck are still underway.

Trudeau also defended the federal government’s conditional approval of a major LNG project near Prince Rupert, saying voters should not have to choose between the environment and economic growth, but should expect climate change and pollution are appropriately managed.

On the topic of economic growth, Trudeau spoke about how the government can continue to spend money while Canada remains in a deficit. He stressed that the federal government believes funding infrastructure projects will pay dividends for the lower mainland.

“More seabus service… improving the Broadway Line, making sure that we’re getting light rail connections to Surrey. This means making the investments that we need to make, so that people can have good jobs in construction in the short term, but in the medium and long term find it easier to get to and from work.”

The Prime Minister wrapped up by saying that while he’s proud of the work the federal government has done in his first year, there’s still much more to do going into the future.
