Illness shouldn’t be ignored in the workplace: expert

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – How sick is too sick to work?

According to staffing expert Ashleigh Brown at Robert Half, if there’s a chance you’re going to spread that illness, you should stay home.

“Everyone’s always well-intentioned, they don’t want to burden their colleagues, they don’t want to fall behind in their work,” she says.

But she says ignoring illness isn’t good for anyone.

“The productivity of that person is down, if it’s being spread the productivity of the department goes down, then we’re all catching up down the road.”

Brown learned this lesson first-hand. She says she was once a work-at-all costs boss, and it put her in the hospital for three weeks with pneumonia.

She says workers can suggest working from home for a day or two, while managers can help by making everyone more comfortable about staying home.
