“Like a jilted lover”: Air Miles customers left with unwanted toasters

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Even though Air Miles has dropped plan to cancel its points expiring, many feel burned because they traded them in for items they didn’t really want rather than have their miles disappear.

And the company isn’t allowing people to return those rewards to get their points back.

When you read some of the Tweets from outraged users — you can feel their pain through the screen.

One guy says he used his points for a kettle he didn’t really want. Another says even trying to speak with Air Miles has been impossible, with holds times lasting at least an hour and a half.

SFU marketing expert Lindsay Meredith feels this will hurt the company in the long-term.

“Now simply refusing to reimburse simply adds more gas to the fire,” says Meredith. “There’s going to be further pushback as well. Is there an easy way out of this marketing mess? Regrettably not.”

Meredith expects this problem to linger in the minds of customers for some time to come.

“Kind of like — the analogy is — it’s kind of like a jilted lover,” says Meredith. “Once they’re jilted, they stay jilted.”

In the meantime, enjoy that extra toaster.
