Cold snap prompts warning from WorkSafeBC for outdoor workers

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The chilly weather we are experiencing can make doing what would normally be an easy job quite a bit more challenging, especially if you work with your hands.

WorkSafeBC is encouraging both employers and workers to have a plan as a means of managing risks associated with working outside.

A good start is keeping an eye on the forecast and watching for weather warnings and make sure to stay covered up! Exposed skin can freeze quickly and become frost bitten. It’s a good idea to layer up and remove any wet clothes as soon as possible. Cold-related injuries can include hypothermia and trench foot.

Get lots of sleep and stay hydrated — this will help you stay focused and avoid any on the job accidents.

Another good suggestion is to wear a hat as body heat escapes through the head. And think about slowing down and pacing the work at hand, and make sure there are scheduled breaks in warm and dry areas.

Since 2011, 72 works have been injured, and one person died as a result of weather related incidents.
