Dozens of families register for new adoption website following launch

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It seems a new website meant to make adoption kids in care in BC faster and easier is getting a lot of early interest. Over 120 potential adoptive families have registered on the Adopt BC Kids site in the six weeks since it launched.

Getting everything done in order to be approved to adopt a child in care has been arduous for both families and case workers in the past. It’s a lot easier to get through the paperwork since the launch of Adopt BC Kids. Potential new parents can access the site as long as they have a BCeID. They can browse child profiles there as well once they have an approved home study.

Designated Provincial Director of Adoption Anne Clayton with the BC Children’s Ministry says she has been helping a couple of families get set up today, so the total number registered is growing every day.

Clayton says people wanting to adopt can use Adopt BC Kids to complete the application, consent to a prior contact check and criminal record check and provide their references online. “It’s trying to remove some of the linear time constraints which have been in the process previously and take work load off of our staff and make it easier for potential adoptive families to do things from home rather than actually going into an office and meeting with workers and taking time off work to do that.”

She adds the system automates things which used to have to be done by case workers, leaving them more time to focus on meeting families and children. Clayton says the ultimate goal is to get kids in care permanent homes much faster.
