VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – BC NDP leader John Horgan says rising housing prices and new homes taxes were the biggest story of the past year.
In a year-end interview with NEWS1130, Horgan says the difficulty of finding a place to buy or rent was likely top of mind of most people in the province.
However, it’s the ongoing opioid crisis that he dubbed the biggest challenge of 2016.
“I visited the Insite safe injection site… I was just knocked over at the level of compassion of the people that work there every single day surrounded by tragic stories of folks that are in a spiral of addiction and mental health challenges that most people can’t imagine,” he says. “It really hits hard because anyone could find themselves in these situations… and I think we lose sight of that when we hear news stories about another death and now hundreds of deaths this year.”
The BC Coroners Service says the province reached an all-time high of 755 overdose deaths in one year by the end of November with December numbers expected next month.
