Vancouver’s street clearing plan too late for disability advocates

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The city of Vancouver’s plan to salt and clear neighbourhood streets is getting a mixed reaction from advocates for people with disabilities.

Jane Dyson with the Disability Association of BC says while they’re happy it’s being done, her clients have been struggling to get around for weeks.

“Clearly we haven’t done a very good job,” she says. “The snow has been around for four weeks now and it’s not going away, and the ice is treaterous.”

City engineers admit they usually just wait for the weather to warm up, but that hasn’t happened this time.

“I’ve seen people with disabilities in wheelchairs having to go down the middle of the road because the roads are clear but the sidewalks aren’t,” Dyson adds.

She encourages home owners and businesses to be more proactive about clearing their sidewalks.
