Check what network your cell phone uses

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – If you still have one of those old school flip phones or know someone who does, a heads up from Vancouver Police.

The department says effective January 31st, cell phones that run on the older Code Division Multiple Access network will no longer be active, which means, they’ll no longer be able to make a 911 call.

The technology won’t be supported in BC after that date and that also means voice, text or any data communication won’t work either. In recent years, phones using CDMA have been given to vulnerable people so they have access to 911 if they need it.

The VPD says if your phone has a removable SIM card then you likely still have access to 911 even without a network contract and without the SIM inserted. If you aren’t sure what kind of phone you have then you’re encouraged to ask your service provider.
