No skating allowed on Trout Lake as warm temperatures weaken ice

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Skaters won’t be able to lace up on Trout Lake for at least the next two days, but the Vancouver Park Board says winter activity enthusiasts shouldn’t put their gear back into storage just yet.

Warming temperatures, puddles and slush prompted the board to close the lake yesterday, after opening it to public skating last Wednesday for the first time since 1996.

“We’re going to make sure that if it is available, we can give people another chance to get out there because this is something I’ve been fighting for since day one of this cold snap and it’s something we don’t get a lot of opportunities to do,” explains Park Board chair Michael Wiebe.

“We are hopeful that Mother Nature will give us another opportunity to enjoy this wonderful outdoor skating experience,” adds Wiebe. “Our staff will be assessing daily when freezing temperatures return and it’s our intention to try to re-open this ice as soon as we determine that conditions are safe.”

The Park Board will test the ice again on Wednesday and issue an update around noon.

There are no other ponds or lakes in Vancouver that have ice thick enough to allow public skating.
