A reminder to renters about their rights

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Knowing your rights as a renter can help you resolve difficult situations with your landlord.

The woman didn’t want to go on record but did tell us her story. She says was threatened that her rent would either be raised or the condo she was living in would be sold.

She says she felt bullied by the situation and was looking for answers.

Andrew Yamamoto with the Tenant Resource Advisory Centre says there are protections in place for renters, even if a property is sold.

“They (the current landlord) actually don’t have the right to issue a two-month eviction notice for landlord use of property. When the property is sold, the current tenant remains living there and their tenancy agreement is transferred to the new owner who then becomes their new landlord.”

He says a lot of renters just don’t know their rights.

“A lot of tenants do think that when their landlords are selling their house, they can expect an eviction notice.”

Yamamoto says renters should do some research before signing the dotted line on a questionable deal.

“Regardless of what stage of tenancy you’re in, whether you are just looking for housing right now, whether you are in housing and just want to proactively educate yourself, or you have already come across a problem with your landlord, we are here to help.”
