Demonstrators plan to wear Pussy Hats at rally on Saturday

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Thousands of people are expected to attend an anti-Trump women’s march in Vancouver on Saturday.

A wardrobe accessory will be making its debut that day.

“It will be a sea of wonderful colour out there,” says one of the march organizers, Samantha Monckton.

She’s referring to what’s being called the Pussy Hat. It’s essentially a pink toque with ears on it.

The name of the hat comes from a word Trump once used to describe where he likes to grab women.

“We take the power back when we’re nasty women wearing our Pussy Hats,” says Monckton.

Thousands of women, who’ve been working from an online pattern, are furiously knitting in the lead up to Saturday’s rally.

“It’s something that is tangible, that people can do and make for others. It’s a very cool way to partake in activism from your armchair.”

The ultimate purpose is to share the hats.

“I don’t how to knit. My lovely friend Marissa from London, Ontario, knowing I can’t knit, made me one. And she’s mailing it in time for the march,” Monckton notes.

The plan is, after the march, the toques will then be donated to women’s shelters and centres.
