SMITHERS (NEWS1130) – Smithers is in the national spotlight, but not in a good way.
The town of 5,000 in northern BC has been given a “Paperweight Award” by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business.
The awards are a list of the year’s most outrageous red tape hassles faced by small business.
Laura Jones with the CFIB says a merchant in Smithers was forced to build a sidewalk to nowhere.
“And he applied for a commercial building that he owns and he’s told that he essentially has to build a 30-metre sidewalk across the street from his business that connects nothing to nowhere.”
Another example on the list is a pair of young girls in Ottawa whose lemonade stand was shut down by the National Capital Commission for not having the right permits!
