2017 might be another record-breaking year for local film industry

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Metro Vancouver’s film and TV industry is coming off a record-breaking year and signs indicate this year could be even bigger.
“At this point there’s no sign of things slowing down,” says Prem Gill, with Creative BC which supports the local movie industry, as well as digital arts, video game, animation, music and magazine publishing businesses.
Last year was so busy, some say local film crews were 20 per cent busier than the year before.
Fifty active crews were handling the workload, where only about 30 crews were needed just a few years ago.
The industry was so swamped, there were even shortages in labour, locations and equipment.
Gill says that’s where long-term planning comes in.
“How do we encourage young people to consider careers in the motion picture industry? The industry works very closely with post-secondary institutions on their training programs and on what’s changing and what skill-sets are needed.”
As for what’s happening this year, Gill says many TV series are coming back.
“Warner Brothers just renewed at least five of their shows, which include The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl and Supernatural, which is great.”
Deadpool 2 is set to start filming in the spring. The region is always a favourite for TV pilots, many of which get signed on to continue.
