On Valentine’s Day, women spending more, men spending less

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The gender gap is widening when it comes to Valentine’s Day spending.

According to Katie Hammill with RetailMeNot.ca, the average Canadian woman will spend 170 per cent more this year — about $234 dollars.

“However, not such good news for the ladies, men are planning on spending 25 per cent less this year than they did last year,” Hammill says. “They’re going to spend around $116 versus around $155.”

She says there’s a trend towards women purchasing higher-priced items, while only four per cent of men say they intend to purchase jewelry this year.

Dinner out, flowers and gift cards top the list of the most expensive gifts.

Hammill says men seem to favour more cost-effective options like chocolate or candy.
