TransLink looking into winter weather delays on Canada Line

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – TransLink wants to know what happened during last week’s winter chaos which caused major delays on the Canada Line.

An investigation was launched by the transit authority looking to figure out whether anything can be done to avoid any similar situations.

There are things in place to deal with snow and ice on the SkyTrain system, like using de-icer trains that spray solutions on both the rails and power collectors.

They also run trains through the night when there’s wintery weather, but according to TransLink spokesperson Chris Bryan, none of it worked this time.

“This winter has been an extraordinary winter. So we’ve definitely had opportunities to test out our practices, our protocols. We probably haven’t had a winter like this since probably 2008-2009. This is a great chance for us to review everything we did in terms of ice and snow.”

Bryan adds that overall, he feels like TransLink did a good job managing the unique winter we’ve experienced in Metro Vancouver.

“All usual things that we would usually do to prevent ice-buildup on the tracks that usually work, didn’t work. So we are taking a deeper look to figure out what happened.”
