Supreme Court to hear appeals about Trinity Western law school

OTTAWA (NEWS 1130) – A final decision on whether future graduates from a proposed law school at Trinity Western University can work in the country is set to be made.

The Supreme Court of Canada says it will hear appeals by the law societies in BC and Ontario, which don’t want graduates accredited.

NEWS 1130 Legal Analyst, Michael Shapray says after this, the years-long legal battle will be over.

“That decision will govern across Canada. So it will have an impact on all of the provinces, there won’t be different hearings in different provinces and there are no further appeals.”

Yet he doesn’t expect this case will be over soon.

“I don’t expect a hearing before the fall session at the earliest. My expectation would be that they will take a number of months to render a decision.”

The university’s covenant is behind the battle.

It bans sex outside of marriage between a man and woman.
