More snow expected for the South Coast this weekend

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Every time you think we’re done with the snow and frigid temperatures — we get hit again. Environment Canada says a cold and unsettled air mass will begin to settle over the South Coast late today and will stick around through the weekend and into early next week.

The potential for snow will begin tonight and increase for Saturday and Sunday as a low pressure system develops off the west coast of Vancouver Island.

NEWS 1130 Meteorologist Russ Lacate has been tracking this weather system all week. “And it appears that right on schedule the milder, rainy weather will be replaced with a fresh supply of cold air tonight. Here we go again! There’s another chance of flurries or at least mixed rain and snow showers or ice pellets in your chilly weekend weather pattern. Morning temperatures will be near zero and daytime highs will only be five degrees this weekend.”

It’s expected temperatures will return to near seasonal values by mid-week, but don’t hold your breath.

Given the forecast, it may not be a great weekend to head out of if you’re planning to take the Coquihalla. There’s a snowfall warning for the highway between Hope and Merritt.

Bob Gilowski with VSA Highway Maintenance says about 30 centimetres of snow is expected today. “Specifically the area around the snowshed and we’ve got a full contingent of crews out there that are going to be monitoring that situation and see how things unfold as we get into the early hours of tomorrow morning.”

He adds there will be about eight to 12 snow plows working on the Coquihalla between Hope and Merritt. Meanwhile, there is also a snowfall warning for Highway 3, between Hope and Princeton, with up to 30 centimetres expected.
